SafeGrade Terms of Service

Last updated: 18 September 2026

These terms explain the rules for using SafeGrade. Please read them — they cover what you can expect from us, what we expect from you, how payments and cancellations work, and the limits of what our analysis can tell you. Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer.

1. Who we are

SafeGrade (“we”, “us”) is a trading name of Liam Broad, 4th Floor, 14 Museum Place, Cardiff, CF10 3BH. You can contact us at help@safegrade.co.uk.

2. Who can use SafeGrade

2.1 SafeGrade is for students at UK higher education institutions. To create an account you must register with a valid institutional email address (for example, one ending in .ac.uk) or sign in with an eligible institutional Microsoft account.

2.2 You must be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18, you must have permission from a parent or guardian before buying a paid plan.

2.3 You are responsible for keeping your login details and two-factor authentication method secure. Tell us straight away at help@safegrade.co.uk if you think someone else has accessed your account.

2.4 One account per person. Accounts are not transferable.

3. What SafeGrade does — and doesn't do

3.1 SafeGrade provides writing-analysis tools, including Deep Scan (an assessment of patterns associated with AI-generated writing), improvement suggestions, grammar and referencing checks, grade band estimates, research planning, and Sage, an AI writing advisor. Features vary by plan.

3.2 Our results are indicative, not definitive. Deep Scan verdicts, confidence indicators, grade band estimates and all other outputs are automated assessments that can be wrong. They are not a determination of whether a piece of work was written by a person or by AI, and they are not a prediction of the mark your institution will award.

3.3 Do not use SafeGrade results as evidence against anyone. You must not use our outputs to accuse any person of academic misconduct, or present them as proof in any disciplinary, academic integrity or legal process.

3.4 SafeGrade is not affiliated with Turnitin, UCAS, or any university or assessment body. Our results do not reflect how any institution's own tools or markers will assess your work.

3.5 You are responsible for following your institution's rules, including its rules on the use of AI tools. If you're unsure whether using SafeGrade or Sage is permitted for an assignment, check with your institution first.

4. Acceptable use

You must not:

  • use SafeGrade to write, or have written, work that you submit as your own;
  • use SafeGrade to disguise, rewrite or alter AI-generated text so that it avoids detection by any institution's systems;
  • upload work belonging to someone else without their permission;
  • upload anything unlawful, or content that infringes someone else's rights;
  • attempt to extract, copy or reverse-engineer our prompts, models, systems or code, or use automated means to access the service;
  • share, sell or resell your account or access to it;
  • attempt to get around usage limits, security controls, or domain restrictions on partnership plans;
  • interfere with or disrupt the service or its infrastructure.

We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules (see section 10).

5. Your content

5.1 You keep ownership of everything you upload or write (“your content”).

5.2 You give us permission to store and process your content only as needed to provide the service to you. We do not use your content to train AI models, and we do not share it with your institution.

5.3 To provide AI features, your content is processed by our AI provider, Anthropic, acting on our behalf. Our Privacy Policy explains which service providers process your data, where, for how long, and how to exercise your rights.

6. Plans and payments

6.1 Free plan. Includes a limited allowance of features each month, as shown on our pricing page.

6.2 Paid plans. Pro, VIP and partnership plans are monthly subscriptions. Current prices and allowances are shown on our pricing page and at checkout. Payments are processed by Stripe.

6.3 Automatic renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically each month, and you'll be charged on the renewal date until you cancel.

6.4 Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, your account moves to the Free plan straight away until payment succeeds. We do not offer a grace period.

6.5 Usage Boost. A Usage Boost is a one-off purchase available to Pro subscribers. It increases your allowances for the rest of your current billing period only. Unused allowance does not carry over, and you can buy one Boost per billing period.

6.6 Partnership plans. Society and Department partnership plans are available to eligible students using a valid partnership code and institutional email address. If you are no longer eligible, or the partnership ends, we'll tell you in advance and you can move to another plan or cancel.

6.7 Referrals. Where we offer a referral reward, the details are shown in the app. We may change or end the referral scheme at any time, but we'll honour rewards you've already earned.

6.8 Price changes. We'll give you at least 30 days' notice by email before changing the price of your subscription. The change applies from your next renewal after the notice period, and you can cancel before then. Where we've told you in writing that your current price is locked for a set period, we'll honour that.

7. Usage limits

7.1 Each plan includes allowances for each feature, shown on our pricing page.

7.2 Because AI analysis has real costs that vary with the length and complexity of your work, paid plans also include a fair-use limit based on processing cost. This means you may occasionally reach a limit before using every item in your allowance — for example, if you analyse many very long essays. If that happens, the app will tell you, and your limits reset at the start of your next billing period.

8. Cancellation

8.1 Cancelling a subscription. You can cancel at any time in Settings. You'll keep access to your paid plan until the end of the billing period you've already paid for, and you won't be charged again.

8.2 Your 14-day right to cancel. As a consumer, you normally have the right to cancel a new subscription or purchase within 14 days. Because SafeGrade is a digital service that starts immediately, at checkout we'll ask you to agree to start straight away and to confirm you understand that:

  • if you cancel a subscription within 14 days, we may keep a proportionate amount for the service you've received up to that point; and
  • a Usage Boost is supplied immediately, so once you have agreed to that and your extra allowance is applied, you lose the right to cancel it.

To cancel within 14 days, email help@safegrade.co.uk with your account email address.

8.3 Refunds are made to your original payment method within 14 days of us agreeing a refund.

9. If something goes wrong

9.1 We aim to keep SafeGrade available and working well, but we can't guarantee uninterrupted access. We may need to pause the service for maintenance, security or reasons outside our control.

9.2 If our service is faulty or not as described, you have legal rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which may include having the problem fixed or getting some or all of your money back. Contact help@safegrade.co.uk and we'll put it right.

9.3 We may change or remove features over time. If we remove something significant from your paid plan, we'll tell you in advance, and you can cancel and receive a refund for any period you've paid for but won't use.

10. Suspending or closing accounts

10.1 You can delete your account at any time in Settings, or by emailing help@safegrade.co.uk from your account email address.

10.2 We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if we need to for security or legal reasons, or if your account is used fraudulently. Where reasonable, we'll warn you first and give you a chance to fix the problem. If we close your account for a reason that isn't your fault, we'll refund any period you've paid for but won't use.

11. Our responsibility to you

11.1 Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot legally be limited.

11.2 We are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable.

11.3 SafeGrade is for personal, educational use. We are not responsible for academic outcomes, including marks, grades, progression decisions, or any academic misconduct process, because these depend on your own work and on decisions made by your institution — see section 3.

11.4 Apart from section 11.1, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose or £50.

11.5 You are responsible for keeping your own copies of your work. Please don't rely on SafeGrade as your only copy of anything.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If a change materially affects you, we'll email you at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you don't agree, you can cancel before the change applies. The “Last updated” date shows the current version.

13. Complaints

If you're unhappy with anything, email help@safegrade.co.uk. We aim to respond within 5 working days.

14. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. You can bring proceedings in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts.
